Restaurants in DeSoto County: What opened in 2021; what's opening soon

The restaurant scene in DeSoto County has continued to grow over the last year, with more than 10 restaurants opening. At least 12 more are slated to open next year.

From family-owned restaurants and outposts of longtime Memphis favorites to breakfast eateries and burger joints, the new places are a diverse collection.

Here's a look at what's new and on the way:

6518 Goodman Rd. Suite 108, Olive Branch; (662) 408-4815

2 Crazy Fellas opened in January 2021. The restaurant sells cajun- inspired food such as "voodoo nachos" and gumbo. Bread and banana puddings are also on the menu, along with root-beer floats. 

7488 Hacks Cross Rd, Olive Branch; (601) 651-3117

The Birmingham, Alabama-based chain opened in early October. Jacks serves American-styled food such as burgers, fries, fried chicken and sandwiches. 

Originally based in Hernando, City Hall Cheesecake opened its location in Silo Square in September 2020. Cheesecake flavors, which include banana pudding, Snickers and blueberry, rotate daily and are available by the slice or as a cupcake.

Two separate restaurants that share one counter, I Need Coffee and Sushi Now opened in late September 2021. I Need Coffee's menu includes boba, sandwiches  and, of course, coffee. Sushi Now's menu features tuna lettuce wraps, spicy crawfish nachos and sushi rolls with inventive namessuch as the green hornet and the red headed stepchild.

Opened in mid-September 2021, Top Shelf Grill offers a view from its rooftop bar as well as a menu that includes, salads, burgers, steak and salmon as well as 49 different beers. They also offer the option to host private dining events in the restaurant. 

182 E Center St, Hernando; (662) 469-9276

Primarily a take-and-bake shop, Mrs. Hippie Eats opened in April. The restaurant offers a wide selection of frozen casseroles and soups ready to thaw and reheat as well as a handful of fresh items, including chicken salad.

541 Stateline Rd W, Southaven; (662) 548-7377

Jumbo turkey legs are the star of the menu, but other items include stuffed whole cornish hens, whole catfish and smothered pork chops. 

Known for its acai sorbet bowls and smoothies, the Acai Bar offers organic, gluten free, dairy free and soy-free options to customers. 

Opened in November 2020, Elfo Grisanti's serves original Grisanti’s pizzas, salads and desserts out of the pizzeria part of the building while a fine dining room features Grisanti family specialties.

Almeta's Sammich Shaq opened on Nov. 30, 2020, and is one of Walls Mayor Keidron Henderson's favorite places to eat. A bar and grill with a Louisiana-Chicago twist, Almeta's has a large menu that includes burgers and fries, wings, shrimp and chicken veggie mixes and catfish. 

775 Goodman Rd E, Southaven; (662) 510-2028

Opened November 2020, Juicy Seafood features seafood boils with a variety of different seasonings. It also offer a make-your-own seafood combo as well as combo specials.

4975 Pepper chase Dr. Southaven; (662) 253-8989

The Southaven location of this Memphis restaurant is set to open at the end of December. The menu includes shrimp, snow crab and lobster tail. 

Set to open in the winter of 2022 in Silo Square, Tekila Mexican Bar & Grill also has a location on North Germantown Parkway in Cordova. The menu features modern Mexican cuisine such as fajitas and taco salad. 

Set to open to Dec. 4, the coffee shop plans to serve tea, pastries, gelato, and, of course, coffee. There will be outdoor seating as well as seating near an indoor fireplace. 

Central BBQ, which opened in 2002 and has four locations in Memphis, will open its first location in Mississippi in the summer of 2022 in Silo Square.

The Silo Square location of the Wing Guru will be the second Southaven location, but the first location to have a full bar. Items on the menu include 21 flavors of wings, cocktails and beers.

Georgia Blue, a Mississippi-based restaurant, will be opening in Silo Square. The restaurant is known for a menu that features Southern-style fish and meat dishes, pasta, sandwiches and a cocktail menu featuring the restaurant's own line of spirits.

2868 May Blvd, Southaven & 2353 Hwy 51 South, Suite 2, Hernando 

Two locations of Vampire Penguin will open in Southaven and Hernando. The Southaven location to set to open either right before Christmas or right after New Years while the Hernando location is set to open in January. Vampire Penguin will serve shaved snow and a variety of desserts. 

6885 Getwell Rd. North, Southaven & Goodman & Airways, Southaven

Two Whataburger locations are set to open in Southaven in 2022. The Texas-based chain is known for its burgers, fries and breakfast wraps. The location off Getwell Rd. is set to open first, in early 2022.

Opening in early 2022, the Silo Square restaurant will serve freshly squeezed juices, smoothies and teas along with create-your-own salads. 

875 Goodman Road E Suite 875 Southaven; (662) 536-6920

BBQ Allstars, a 12,000-square-foot superstore created by seven-time world barbecue champion Melissa Cookston, is hoping to open later this month. It will include a large selection of barbecue-related products, outdoor living items and a cooking class area.

Set to open in January 2022, Mugshots Grill & Bar is known for its burgers and beer-battered fries. Other items on the menu include wraps, salads and chicken dishes. 

Staks' Silo Square location will be the third location for the Memphis-based restaurant. Known for pancakes and create-your-own omelets, Staks also has an extended menu of lunch options.
