3 Detroit Red Wings Prospects Remain in the NCAA Frozen Four

Detroit Red Wings General Manager Steve Yzerman held onto all of his top prospects during the recent NHL Trade Deadline.

The Detroit Red Wings currently have 13 prospects playing in the NCAA and six of them started out in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Frozen Four tournament.

The first two games of the Regional segment of the tournament were played over the weekend.  The semi-finals will be played at TD Garden Boston on April 7, and the Final will be played at TD Garden on April 9.

Here is a look at the six Red Wings prospects who started the tournament:

In the first round of the Regionals, #1 ranked Denver defeated #4 ranked UMass Lowell 3-2.  The  victory for Denver allowed them to advance for a second round matchup with Minnesota Duluth.

In the second round of the Regionals, Denver defeated Minnesota Duluth 2-1 on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals against Minnesota State.

Freshman LW Carter Mazur was recently award NCHC Rookie of the Year.  Mazur was drafted by Detroit in the 3rd round of the 2021 draft.

In 39 games, Mazur has scored 14 goals, 22 assists, 36 points, and a +20 rating.

Freshman defenseman Shai Buium has had an outstanding first season at Denver.  Buium was drafted by Detroit in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft.

In 37 games, Buium has scored three goals, 14 assists, 17 points, and a +16 rating.

Sopomore defenseman Antti Tuomisto has played an important defensive role with Denver.  Tuomisto was drafted by Detroit in the 2nd round of the 2019 draft.

Tuomisto has played 33 games this season, scoring one goal, eight assists, nine points, and a +20 rating.  In 57 career NCAA games, Tuomisto has scored three goals, 17 assists, 20 points, and a +18 raing.

Mazur and Buium have three years of NCAA eligibility remaining and their rights remain with Detroit until June 1, 2025.  Tuomisto has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining and his rights remain with Detroit until June 1, 2024.

In the first round of the Regionals, #3 ranked Notre Dame defeated #2 ranked North Dakota for the only upset of the first round.  The 2-1 victory by Notre Dame allowed them to advance for a second round matchup with Minnesota State.

In the second round of the Regionals, Minnesota State defeated Notre Dame 1-0 on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals against the University of Denver.

Senior forward Jack Adams transferred to Notre Dame for his final season of NCAA eligibility.  Adams was drafted by Detroit in the 6th round of the 2017 draft.

Adams finished his season having played 38 games, scoring six goals, 10 assists, 16 points, and a +6 rating.  In 110 career NCAA games, Adams scored 20 goals, 31 assists, 51 points, and a +21 rating.

Adams must sign an entry-level contract by June 1 or he will become a free agent.

In the first round of the Regionals, the #2 ranked North Dakota lost their opening round match with Notre Dame 2-1.

Sophomore defenseman Cooper Moore was playing in his second season for the University of North Dakota.  Moore was drafted by Detroit in the 5th round of the 2019 draft.

Moore finished the season having played 38 games, scoring two goals, seven assists, nine points, and a +2 rating.  In 56 career NCAA games, Moore has scored four goals, 10 assists, 14 points, and a -5 rating.

Moore has two years of NCAA eligibility remaining and his rights remain with Detroit until June 1, 2024.

In the first round of the Regionals, #4 ranked Harvard lost 4-3 to Minnesota State.

Freshman defenseman Kyle Aucoin was playing his first season for Harvard University.  Aucoin was drafted by Detroit in the 6th round of the 2020 draft.

Aucoin finished the season having played 30 games, will picking up two assists, and a -1 rating.

Aucoin has three years of NCAA eligibility remaining and his rights remain with Detroit until June 1, 2025.
