Facing the Unthinkable, Bering Sea Crabbers Go to Feds and State as Council Gets Underway Last updated at 11:24 a.m. PDT

The stakes could not be higher for Bering Sea crab fishermen and processors as they face a second year of low survey numbers and high uncertainty in population models. Last year with a closure of Bristol Bay red king crab (BBRKC) the fleet lost $200 million in ex-vessel prices. The cost of lost revenue to processors, communities and businesses and schools within them, and markets is not included in that number.

Snow crab has all but ...

Nova Scotia Seafood Company Has a Lot of Repair Work Ahead After Fiona

Trucking containers weighed down with over 50,000 pounds of frozen crab floated around the parking lot like cardboard boats.

The waves kicked up by post tropical storm Fiona also smashed through the foot-thick concrete retaining wall that had always protected Victoria Fisheries Co-op from sea swells.

Now the company is left with what will be a months-long task of cleaning up and rebuilding.

The building has been sitting on the shore of Neil’s Harbour, Nova Scotia, since 1956.

“We did everything we usually do...

NOAA Officials Get an Earful From Maine Lobstermen Over Further Efforts to Protect Right Whales

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is considering a new round of measures aimed at reducing the risks that commercial fishing poses to the endangered North Atlantic right whale population.

Several hundred people attended a virtual meeting Tuesday evening, which NOAA officials billed as a forum to collect feedback from fishermen about possible trap limits and more seasonal closures and gear changes.

Most of the speakers were Maine lobstermen, who believe the changes will devastate their businesses and the state's economy...

Could a Tax Decision in Norway Stall a Newfoundland Salmon Farm?

The Norwegian government has salmon farming companies and investors there running scared.

It’s over a proposed rent resource tax that could flatten profits, curb spending and job creation in that country and even in Atlantic Canada.

Share values of publicly-traded Grieg ASA and Mowi dropped by nearly 14 per cent on Wednesday on Oslo’s stock exchange.

The sell-off was prompted by news that the Norwegian government is proposing to introduce a resource tax on salmon and trout farming of 40 per cent for volumes over 5,000 tonnes...

More Than Half the Fishing Ports in Fiona's Path Damaged

More than half of the small craft harbours in the path of Fiona in Atlantic Canada and Quebec sustained damage, according to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO).

DFO Minister Joyce Murray released the update Thursday.

Fiona smashed into 180 small craft harbours managed by the department.

Murray said 99 are partially operational, five are unusable and 20 need more assessment.

"This is a period of assessing and supporting where we can and decisions will come after we...

The trucking industry has taken its lumps over the last several years be it due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of drivers, chaos at ports due to ongoing supply chain issues, and other factors. Now comes the potential impact of a bill that has been around for a couple of years and is finally starting to make significant waves in California, the state where it was enacted. It’s called...

Crab Deaths More Likely Caused By Industrial Toxins Than Algal Bloom - Study

The deaths of thousands of crabs and lobsters washed up on North Sea beaches are more likely to have been caused by "industrial toxins" than an algal bloom, new research has claimed.

A mass die-off of marine life on the coastline from Hartlepool to Whitby saw crustaceans washed ashore between October and December 2021, with dying creatures "twitching" and displaying lethargic behaviour.

A spokesperson for the Department for Environment (Defra) said earlier this year they had concluded "a naturally occurring harmful algal bloom" was the most...

Scientists at BU Release Juvenile Lobsters to Help Protect and Preserve Sustainable Environments

Juvenile lobsters have been released onto 3D-printed artificial reefs by BU researchers, to discover whether this type of conservation tool will support them and can be used to improve underwater ecosystems in the future.

A team of researchers from the marine conservation department at BU, led by Professor Rick Stafford and Dr Alice Hall have returned to the artificial reef units they deployed two years ago to release juvenile lobsters in collaboration with the Holderness Fishing Industry Group (HFIG).

Vietnamese Seafood Exporters Tasked With Improving Their Game

Amid high inflation and the devaluation of the Euro, tie-ups with the European continent are providing an opportunity for fisheries to be more active in sustainable development and up their game when it comes to the agreed rules of origin on seafood exports to the EU market.

At Thai Minh Long Seafood Co., Ltd. in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu, the best shrimp shipments are being prepared for export to the European market, which is the basis for this business to achieve its growth target of 150...

North Carolina Growers Will Need Approval to Build Floating Structures

WILMINGTON – Shellfish growers are not going to easily get government approval to place floating structures on which they can do their work in their lease areas.

State officials earlier this month determined that floating platforms in shellfish lease sites will be the exception, allowable only through a variance approved by the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission.

State Division of Coastal Management Director Braxton Davis explained during the commission’s Sept. 15 quarterly meeting that while the division support’s North Carolina’s growing...

Scientist Takes the Guesswork Out of Grading Mud Crabs

THE guesswork will soon be removed for fishers in accurately determining the amount of meat in a mud crab thanks to a new device being developed at  James Cook University .

JCU Electronic Systems and Internet of Things senior lecturer Dr Eric Wang’s prototype device uses a near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS) and artificial intelligence (AI) to grade live crabs based on their meat content.

The hand-held device is aimed to replace the current practice of fishers using thumb pressure applied to the carapace of crabs to determine their meat content...

Shellfish Harvesting Georgia Temporarily Closed Due to Hurricane Ian

Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida on Wednesday afternoon as a category 4 storm, bringing with it 150 mph winds. As the storm advances, it’s expected to hit the Georgia and South Carolina area, where forecasters say it will make a second landfall on Friday afternoon.

The southern states are facing threats of coastal flooding due to the storm surge, as well as inland flooding due to torrential rains.

Because of the potential hurricane-associated rainfall and surge, Georgia’s Department of...

After Fiona’s Wrath, Atlantic Fishing Communities Look to Rebuild Livelihoods

Even as the coastal fishing communities across the Atlantic provinces struggle to assess the full scope of Fiona’s destruction  , they’ve begun to turn their attention to rebuilding – and whether it’s possible to rebuild quickly but also thoughtfully, to ward against future powerful storms.

All week, fishermen across Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were left to reckon with the damage left in Fiona’s wake, and to the region’s industry, which exports more than $4.5-billion worth of seafood each year...

Arctic Ocean Acidifying Up To Four Times Faster Than Any Other Sea On Earth

What may be the broadest and longest study to date has found Canada's Arctic Ocean is growing more acidic up to four times faster than any other sea on the planet.

The acidification, linked to the loss of sea ice, will have unknown repercussions for the life in those waters, said Wei-Jun Cai, an oceanographer at the  University of Delaware  and co-author of the study in the journal Science.

"There will be a whole suite of impacts," he said. "Biologists will have to do...

Baltic Sea Pipeline Leak Damages Marine Life and Climate

Methane escaping from the damaged Nord Stream pipelines that run between Russia and Europe is likely to result in the biggest known gas leak to take place over a short period of time and highlights the problem of large methane escapes elsewhere around the world, scientists say.

There is still uncertainty in estimating total damage, but researchers say vast plumes of this  potent greenhouse gas will have significant detrimental impacts on the climate.

Immediate harm to marine life and fisheries in the Baltic Sea and to human health...

Aquaculture: Oyster and Mussel Growers on Prince Edward Island Calculating Losses From Fiona

James Power doesn’t have a final tally yet on how much post tropical storm Fiona cost Raspberry Point Oysters Ltd., but the damages are likely to be in the hundreds of thousands.

The manager of the Prince Edward Island aquaculture business told SaltWire today they figure they’ve lost about $150,000 worth of ropes and gear, and that’s not counting how much they may lose in marketable oysters.

Hawaiian Fishpond Kicks Off State’s First Sea Cucumber Aquaculture

A crowd surrounds David Anderson as he reaches into the large bin's water. He slowly pulls a fine mesh material out of the bin to reveal … nothing. He pulls out another section of the mesh, and there it is-a brown, pinkie-nail-sized, cylindrical blob. "It's like a dark maggot," an onlooker comments.

But this "dark maggot" is actually a baby loli (Hawaiian sea cucumber) whose potential belies its tiny size and appearance. Kauaʻi Sea Farms, in partnership with the Pacific American Foundation, is rearing sea cucumbers  in...
