Here’s some news and notes from under the couch’s cushions:

• Tough loss Saturday for the Bladen County Majors team, but it’s a new day and a new game. Bladen County is scheduled to play the Alabama state champion at 3:15 p.m. Sunday in an elimination game. A win gives the team a bye Monday and a spot in the semifinals Tuesday. Games are being streamed online by JockJive Sports for a one-time $25 charge. Players also can register at Bladen County Recreation’s King Street office. Fees are $30 for Tot Soccer and $35 for 5-7 League, 8-10 League and 11-14 League. For more information call 910-862-6770.

• The Trooper Kevin Conner Memorial Run is scheduled Oct. 15 in downtown Whiteville. There is a 5k, 1-mile run/walk and 5k- and 1-mile virtual run/walk. Click here to register and for information.

• Monday’s the day when tryouts and practice begins for fall sports teams at East Bladen and West Bladen high schools. High temperature expected to be near 95 with heat index values as high as 104. Sounds like fun. Seriously, take precautions in the heat, but coaches and trainers know that.

• Walking the aisles of the grocery store Saturday and saw in the frozen seafood section some packaged octopus tentacles. Didn’t look very appetizing. May be quite tasty, but I’ll never know.

SUNDAY’S PICK TO CLICK

Chris Buescher has finished inside the top six in the two previous Cup road-course races this season. That’s a track record — pardon the pun — that will put him in the top 5 at the checkered flag at Indy and, maybe, his first win of the season and a spot in the playoffs. Going with a long shot, but you’ve got to risk it to get the biscuit.

SATURDAY’S PICK: Lydia Ko has shot consecutive 65s and has a two-shot lead midway through the Women’s Scottish Open. She’ll shoot 66 Saturday and retain the lead. RESULTS: Ko shot 71 and is tied with Celine Boutier for the lead at 15-under going into Sunday’s final round.
