Amongst the dizzying number of fried rice stalls in Singapore, yet another new contender has stepped up to the plate. Located within a coffee shop along Bedok Reservoir Road, Fried Rice Story jazzes up this simple, comforting dish with eye-catching variations — think mala, truffle and teriyaki fried rice. That’s not all; they also offer an array of toppings such as jumbo crab meat and grilled scallops!

The Muslim-friendly stall is run by a trio who evenly divides their tasks between firing up the wok, assembling the plates, taking orders ,and prepping the toppings and side dishes. After learning that one of them is Thai, I wasn’t surprised to see that there’s a bit of Thai influence on the menu as well!

As the chef behind the wok is Malay-Muslim, Fried Rice Story doesn’t serve the typical pork-chop-over-fried-rice combo. Instead, they stand out from the crowd with their chicken, beef and seafood-centric toppings on expertly-tossed Taiwanese pearl grains.

The standard egg fried rice comes with options of shrimps ($6.90), chicken katsu ($6.90), grilled chicken ($6.90), grilled scallops ($7.90), braised beef ($7.90) and jumbo crab meat ($9.90). Talk about a wide range! Top up a dollar to infuse your fried rice with teriyaki, mala or truffle flavours.

There are also side dishes that include Hot Wings ($5.90), Mantou with Condensed Milk ($4.90) and a heavenly-looking Jumbo Crab Meat Omelette ($12/18).

I decided to go for the Egg Fried Rice with Jumbo Crab Meat ($9.90). The fluffy rice was very eggy and was a great plate of simple comfort food that would cater to the tastebuds of many. It was also generously heaped with tobiko (flying fish roe) that added some texture and tiny pops of brininess to the grains.

The crab meat was rather cooked through and may come off as a tad dry for some. Perhaps, because they were of the frozen kind?

A dollop of chilli, which had a smoky, robust flavour profile with slightly bitter undertones, was served on the side.

The truffle hype doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon. The Truffle Egg Fried Rice with Grilled Scallops ($8.90) here delivered a truffle aroma that wasn’t too overwhelming, but distinct enough. Yet, it wasn’t impactful or memorable enough for me to want to order it again. The morsels of scallops were slightly chewy, pleasantly briny, and not too rubbery .

It felt like I ordered the wrong things on the menu and choices like the teriyaki fried rice and crab omelette would have fared better. Nevertheless, Fried Rice Story’s diverse menu is worth giving a second shot so I’ll probably be back again to try out everything else I missed!
