Seafood delivery services have seen a boom in recent years. No longer satisfied with the freshness of what’s on supermarket shelves, customers have started buying oysters, lobsters and prawns directly from aquaculturalists and fishmongers. On top of whole fish and fillets for Friday night’s dinner, these companies deliver cooked tiger prawns, frozen squid and live mussels – and in some cases you can order for next-day delivery.

Fair Fish For the best possible catch of the day, order a seasonal box of freshly caught fish from Fair Fish. The co-operative works with local fishermen to sell seafood directly to restaurants and home cooks, with traceability and seasonality at its core. The $40 Fair Fish SA Seasonality Box includes two species caught that week: a popular one such as Australian salmon or southern calamari, and a secondary species such as yellowfin whiting or snapper. You can opt out of shellfish, prawns, crustaceans and clams if they’re not your thing. If you prefer to have more control, the website is updated daily with the latest catch of the day and you can choose whole, scaled, gutted or filleted fish. Depending on seasonality, you’ll find herring, flathead, Goolwa pippies, flounder, prawns, southern rock lobster, gummy shark and King George whiting. Order before 5pm on Wednesday for a Friday delivery. fairfishsa.com.au

Madam Seafood In 2017, a group of Adelaide mums who like to cook seafood came together to set up an online shop where they could buy direct from a fishmonger without having to leave the house. Madam Seafood operates in conjunction with Mark Lee Fish Farm. Depending on what’s in season, you can order live pippies, live mud crab and live blue swimmer crab. Catches come from all over the country, including Tasmania and West Australia, but the shop also stocks local Coffin Bay Pacific oysters, baby greenlip abalone farmed off Kangaroo Island and Port Lincoln, and South Australian calamari. As well as the fresh stuff, it also stocks dried sea cucumber, canned abalone, frozen squid, tins of caviar and cooked tiger prawns – plus ready-made sashimi or hotpot packs. Order by 5pm on Thursday for Friday delivery. There’s a $50 minimum spend. madamseafood.com.au

Halo Club Halo Club sends three dozen Pacific oysters – grown and harvested in the waters off Coffin Bay – to its subscribers every month for $100 a box. It’s one of the largest organically certified oyster producers in the southern hemisphere, and live oysters arrive at your doorstep sealed in a chill bag, wrapped in burlap on an ice pack. If monthly is too much commitment, you can order a one-off box and have it delivered almost anywhere in Australia. Each box comes with a dressing, such as a strawberry, champagne and black pepper mignonette, which changes each time. Order by mid-month to be included in the next harvest. haloclub.com.au
