Seafood delivery services have seen a boom in recent years. No longer satisfied with the freshness of what’s available on supermarket shelves, customers have started buying oysters, lobsters and prawns directly from aquaculturalists and fishmongers. On top of whole fish and fillets for Friday night’s dinner, these companies deliver raw king prawns, silky squid tubes and live mussels – and in some cases you can order for next-day delivery.

Kailis Bros Operating since 1926, Kailis Bros Fish Market has offered the freshest catch of the day for almost a century – but you no longer have to step inside the Leederville store to purchase fillets of Tasmanian salmon, Shark Bay snapper or Cone Bay barramundi. Kailis Bros now offers home delivery and pick-up services too. Online you’ll find ready-to-bake fillets, such as spicy miso and orange-glazed salmon or harissa-crusted barramundi, which need less than 15 minutes in the oven. There’s cooked rock lobster from Jurien Bay, cleaned and debearded mussels, half-shell scallops and large raw Shark Bay king prawns. Kailis Bros also has a seafood pack for easy entertaining; the current one has poached salmon seasoned with lemon pepper or a Moroccan spice. It also has an online pantry with olive oil, bread, anchovies, vinegar and caviar. There’s a $70 minimum spend for deliveries and shipping fees are calculated by weight. kailisbrosleederville.com.au

Halo Club Halo Club sends three dozen Pacific oysters – grown and harvested in the waters off Coffin Bay – to its subscribers every month for $100 a box. It’s one of the largest organically certified oyster producers in the southern hemisphere, and live oysters arrive at your doorstep sealed in a chill bag, wrapped in burlap on an ice pack. If monthly is too much commitment, you can order a one-off box and have it delivered anywhere in WA. Each box comes with a dressing, such as a strawberry, champagne and black pepper mignonette, which changes each time. Order by mid-month to be included in the next harvest. haloclub.com.au

Fins Seafood The wholesale fishmonger services some of Perth’s best restaurants, and it’s evolved into a city-wide delivery service for home cooks too, based in Hamilton Hill. Owners Phil Clark and John Cordin like to make sure everyone knows the backstory of a fisherman’s catch – whether you’re a chef or a novice. They detail not just where the fish was caught, but also the boat and fisher who caught it. Fins has a Seafood Club box, which includes fish fillets, shellfish and crustaceans for $120 a fortnight or month. It might have goldband snapper, New Zealand salmon, Abrolhos Islands scallops, Shark Bay king prawn cutlets and Venus clams, plus dried casarecce pasta from Sal’s Pasta, depending on what’s available. There’s also an At Home With Chef box for $150, which contains everything you need (including condiments) to make two restaurant-quality meals for two people – or one meal for four. Non-seafood ingredients come from local suppliers, such as Linley Valley Pork, The Mushroom Guys and Mottainai Lamb, and you’ll receive a link to a video to find out how to cook it all, along with a fun playlist. If you’d rather order a whole snapper or bag of raw prawns, you can do that too via the Fresho app or through Dirty Clean Food. finsseafood.com.au

West Coast Seafood From hoki fillets to squid tubes, if it lives in the ocean, West Coast Seafood has it fresh, frozen or cooked and ready to deliver. If you live in the Perth metro area you can order online before midday and have it delivered the next day. There’s a $10 delivery fee, but you can fill your cart with whole smoked trout, tuna steaks, barramundi portions, raw WA king prawns, crumbed seafood, heat-and-eat packs of fish’n’chips, fish and vegetable pie and chicken and dessert. When you need a good selection without having to think too much about it, there’s a barbeque pack of raw prawns, fish fillets, scallops, whole mussels and squid tubes for $25. The minimum order is three items and payment is taken by cash or eftpos on delivery. westcoastseafood.com.au

Festival Fish One the main wholesalers in Perth sources most of its produce from Western Australia and it operates 24 hours a day, meaning you can drop them a line in the middle of the night and have fresh seafood on the table by the following lunchtime. Festival Fish is a little old-school – there’s no online ordering system, for example, but you can call or email your order and it’ll deliver to your home. The family business started out in 1981 and it delivers from Monday to Friday each week. The most popular orders are for salmon, barramundi, tuna, yellowtail kingfish, swordfish, Fremantle octopus and Exmouth and Shark Bay prawns. The best way to keep track of what’s on offer is to sign up to its newsletter for information on specials and any general updates. festivalfish.com.au
