WASHINGTON — Republicans need to win six seats in the November election to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives. In advertising spending, they’re beating Democrats in seven districts that were already leaning their way.

In just the two weeks since the Sept. 5 Labor Day holiday, the traditional kickoff for November campaigns, GOP candidates and committees have booked $33 million of ads in those races, compared to $24 million for Democrats, according to data from AdImpact, which tracks political spending. These districts, which were all redrawn to make them more solidly Republican, are rated lean or likely Republican by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

Paris firefighters are battling a warehouse blaze at a massive produce market that supplies France’s capital and the surrounding region with much of its fresh food. Footage shared on social media showed a tower of dark smoke billowing from Sunday's fire at the Rungis market. It bills itself as the largest fresh produce market in the world. Firefighters are urging people to stay away from the area, in the south of Paris, while they tackle the blaze.

Attending funerals on behalf of the United States is normally a straightforward assignment for a vice president. But for Kamala Harris, there'll be controversy at nearly every turn as she visits Asia for the memorial honoring former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. American allies are seeking clarity after mixed messages over whether President Joe Biden would send troops to defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion. There’s the potential for more provocations from North Korea, which test-fired a missile shortly before Harris’ departure from Washington. And there’s resentment over a new U.S. law that makes electric vehicles built outside of North America ineligible for subsidies.

Democrats in Florida are trying to make inroads with Latino voters by focusing on gun safety. It's part of an effort to curb the gains made by Republican in Latino-heavy areas as Democrats address gun violence and highlight what they say is the lack of action by Republicans. Few places disappointed Democrats in 2020 as deeply as South Florida. A shift among Latinos toward the GOP contributed to several unexpected losses in House races and helped then-President Donald Trump carry Florida. Democrats are campaigning differently this year as they aim to connect the party’s priorities to the personal experiences of a group that often feels overlooked in national politics.

Prosecutors in the penalty trial of Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz are about to begin their rebuttal case. They are expected to present expert witnesses who will testify starting Tuesday that Cruz is a sociopath and fully responsible for his murder of 17 people at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018. They are trying to counter defense testimony that said Cruz's birth mother drank heavily during pregnancy, damaging his brain. Cruz pleaded guilty last year to murder. The trial is only to determine if the 24-year-old is sentenced to death or life without the possibility of parole. The rebuttal case could take up to two weeks.

Swiss voters appear to have narrowly backed a proposal to raise the retirement age for women to 65, according to projections Sunday by public broadcaster SRF. A separate proposal to impose stricter animal welfare rules for livestock was heading for a big defeat, SRF reported on the basis of partial counts still underway after polls closed at noon. The proposed reform of the Swiss pension system would require women to work an extra year before becoming eligible for full retirement pay benefits. Men already have to work until 65 to get full benefits. Officials say the number of retirees is growing faster than the number of working people.

A retired high-ranking officer in Myanmar’s military has been shot dead at his home in the country’s biggest city, Yangon, the latest such killing attributed to militants opposed to army rule. An urban guerrilla group claimed responsibility for the attack on Maj. Gen. Ohn Thwin, who also had served as Myanmar’s ambassador to Maldives, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa. His son-in-law was also killed. The military government’s spokesperson confirmed their deaths. Ohn Thwin is believed to be the highest-ranking active or retired military officer assassinated since the army seized power last year from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, triggering widespread public opposition. Urban guerrillas have targeted officials, military members and suspected informers.

Serbia’s foreign minister has sought to play down the importance of an agreement with Russia, after the Balkan state that is seeking European Union membership faced criticism for signing it. Nikola Selakovic on Sunday said the deal on foreign policy consultations he signed with Russia's Sergey Lavrov was “technical” and similar documents have been signed regularly since 1996. The news of the deal triggered harsh criticism from the pro-EU opposition at home and some EU politicians. Serbia officially is a candidate for European Union membership, but the government maintains good relations with Russia and has refused to join EU sanctions against Moscow.

Britain’s opposition Labour Party has opened its annual conference with leaders attacking the “immoral” tax-cutting of the new Conservative government. The party has seized on the scrapping of the 45% tax rate for the country’s highest earners as a crux issue for hard-at-heel Britons who are struggling through the worst cost of living rise in decades. Labour leader Keir Starmer says he would reverse the cut and hit energy producers with a windfall tax on bumper profits while also investing in green energy. The conference is taking place in the northern city of Liverpool.

The onset of autumnal weather in Ukraine is making fields too muddy for tanks and beginning to cloud Ukrainian efforts to take back more Russian-held territory before winter freezes the battlefields. The clock is ticking for both sides. Russia is rushing to call up of hundreds of thousands of men to throw into the seven-month war, seeking to reverse its recent losses. The mobilization is sparking Russian protests, with fresh demonstrations Sunday. It is also opening splits in Europe about whether fighting-age Russian men fleeing in droves should be welcomed or turned away.

To do so, the German government has sought out new natural gas suppliers while also installing terminals to bring the fuel into the country by ship. Later Sunday, Scholz was heading to Qatar to meet the emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Neither Francis nor his hosts referred to the vote during the open-air Mass, though Francis mentioned immigration and Italy's low birth rate in comments afterward, hitting on two campaign issues. Italy’s bishops conference had earlier urged Italians to cast ballots in the eagerly watched election that could bring Italy its first far-right government since World War II.
